You’ve Been to the Rest, Now Come to the Best... The National Minority Careers in Education Expo – Open to All Educators is THE job fair to attend. Candidates from all over the country are coming to New York City on February 21, 2009, looking to interview with you!

This is considered by most people to be The Premier Recruiting Event in the Nation! Recruiters praise this job fair saying “that for a recruiter, it’s like Cinderella going to the ball!”

Located in the beautiful historic section of Brooklyn Heights in New York City, the Expo is held at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge. It lies at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge, just a short walk, subway ride or cab ride into Manhattan.

This is a one-day recruitment fair that is like no other that you have ever attended. One secret is in our extensive nation-wide advertising campaign to attract the candidates and in our aggressive approach to Internet recruiting. The other secret is in our attention to detail and in how your recruiters are treated the day of the Expo.

Our hosts and hostesses see to your every need!

Communication is the name of the game. Just call us at (718) 805-5400 to get the ball rolling! A registration form will be sent via eMail, fax or US mail. Your office will receive a large packet of information, detailing all that you will need to know for the day of the Expo. There will be an Anticipated Vacancy check off list to return to the Expo Office. You will also receive a “Confirmation List” for you to confirm that all of the information that we have is correct, and to tell us how many recruiters you are sending so that we can order meals and refreshments. Your recruiters will enjoy a Continental Breakfast, lunch and an invitation to our special Wine & Cheese Wind Down where your staff can sit back and relax after a hectic day and network with their contemporaries from around the country.

Recruiter Questions

Is the Expo only for minority candidates or can any one attend?
Although the emphasis is on Minority attendance, non-minority candidates are, indeed, welcome!

Just what is the Advisory Board?
Advisory Board Members (listed in another area of this website) are there to answer our questions on how to make this the most rewarding event for both the candidates and for the recruiters.

I’ve heard about a handbook that is given to the candidates. How do I get included in this handbook?

Please click here to view a sample By recruiting at the Expo, your school is automatically included in the handbook. If you would like to advertise in the handbook, it is optional and reasonable fees apply. This is a good way to inform applicants about your institution, facilities and community. You can also order the handbook online.

Do you know what candidates will be attending ahead of time?
No we do not. Although there will be pre registration, it is not required to attend the Expo

I have never heard of anything like this before. How did you start doing this?
Back in the early fall of 1990, our founder heard complaints about how difficult it was to attract minorities. They were asked “what if I could get a large group of minority candidates in one room at the same time? Would you be willing to share them?” The answer was a resounding “YES!” and the first Minority Careers in Education Expo was held in the spring of 1991. It has grown from 16 local school districts to over one hundred districts from all over the nation and the world.

Most job fairs are really inexpensive. Why is the Expo so expensive?
First, this is not a college job fair held in an auditorium where there is very little overhead and the staff is on the school payroll, making it very cheap to hold the event. The Expo is held in a high quality New York City hotel, which is very expensive! Add to that the cost of advertising and quality food and refreshments for the recruiters and it is a hefty package. Tylin Promotions (the company that puts on this Expo) works year round to make this event a true “happening” in the field of education. It takes 364 days to produce this event – it’s similar to planning an elaborate wedding!

Now let us ask YOU a question. How much do you spend in recruitment advertising? Think of how much less you would need to spend if you were to hire a number of candidates from one recruitment job fair?

How many candidates are hired out of this event?
We do not know the exact numbers, since the schools are not required to notify us of their hires. However, many schools call to tell us how thrilled they were that they hired a large number of candidates. Most schools hire from one to thirty candidates.

Some schools hire 30 candidates? That’s hard to believe! How do they do that?
With an aggressive recruiting team! Some schools send extra people to walk the aisles of the Expo, handing out literature and talking to candidates, trying to get them to come to their booth. Some schools can only afford to send one recruiter, but they pin information about their school district on the curtain behind them, trying to make it as enticing as possible to attract the candidates. Once you have signed up, you will receive a large packet of information that addresses your recruitment strategy.

I’d like to come to the Expo, but I can’t afford a whole booth. Can I share it with another school?
You can contract for either a full booth or a shared booth. You don’t have to worry about finding someone to share it with. We will take care of that part.

What if I really like a candidate, and want to give them an in depth interview. Is it possible to do so?
There is a Break Out Area that is close to the main booth area for in depth interviews. Each school is autonomous in how they recruit.

Why does your e-mail address have the name of the World Trade Center in it?
The National Minority Careers in Education Expo was held at the World Trade Center for many years. After terrorists attacked it, we set up a fund to help children whose parents lost their lives in the World Trade Center. This is why the e-mail was created. We have kept it as a reminder of that day, and as a tribute to those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

What kind of hotel is the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge?
It is a quality hotel and conference center that has twice won the prestigious “Hotel of the Year” award. It has all of the amenities of any quality hotel and is only a short cab or subway ride away from Midtown Manhattan.

What advice can I give to my recruiters before they come to the Expo?
Be prepared for an exhausting and exhilarating day. Wear comfortable shoes! Get a good night’s rest and be prepared to talk, talk, talk! You will be sent a lot of information on what to expect and how to prepare for the Expo beforehand.

Why should I come to you, when I can recruit effectively for so much less money?
Where else can you have the opportunity to talk to hundreds of qualified and most often experienced educators? Remember that this is not a college job fair! While new graduates are encouraged to attend, the vast majority of our candidates are working, experienced educators. Once you have attended this Expo, you will see why most of our schools return year after year!

Our school district is so far away. Are the candidates willing to relocate? Are other schools who come a long distance successful in their recruiting?
Most of our candidates are willing to relocate. That is why they come to the Expo. About half of the states in the U.S.A. have representatives recruiting at the Expo. They would not be returning year after year if they were not successful!

I came to the Expo a few years ago. It was a wonderful event, but I didn’t hire anyone. Why should I come back?
Did you ever place an expensive newspaper ad for a teacher and not hire anyone? This has probably happened many, many times. Did this stop you from advertising again the next time you needed someone? Of course not! One recruiter told us it’s like going fishing - just because you didn’t catch fish on this trip doesn’t mean you won’t go fishing again, and possibly catch a lot of fish the next time!

Are there any schools who said “no” to the Expo for years and then changed their mind? How did they feel after they came?
This has happened over and over again! Once they finally come, they call our office and say that they cannot imagine why they didn’t come in the past. We are reminded of the old advertising slogan – Try it, you’ll like it!

I’d like to come to the Expo, but it’s just not in my budget for this year. Is there any way that I can reach the candidates, even though I can’t be there?
Advertising in the Candidate Handbook is available at very reasonable rates. There are 2 sections of advertising in the Candidate Handbook. One is an optional opportunity for those who attend the Expo and the other is for those schools who cannot attend. Each candidate gets a Handbook at the Expo, and many are requested over the internet, by phone and mail after the event. Click here to view a sample and  contact us for advertising space...
