Applicant Questions

What is this Expo about? Back in the early fall of 1990, our founder heard complaints about how difficult it was to attract minorities. They were asked “what if I could get a large group of minority candidates in one room at the same time? Would you be willing to share them?” The answer was a resounding “YES!” It has grown from 16 local school districts to over one hundred districts from all over the nation and the world. You will find The National Minority Careers in Education Expo – Open to All Educators to be an experience like no other job fair you have ever attended.

Tylin Promotions coordinates and runs the Expo and they are well versed in the field of education. Our Advisory Board (The Advisory Board Members are listed in another area of this website) answers our questions on how to make this the most rewarding event for both the candidates and for the recruiters.

What schools come to the Expo?

I am not a minority. Should I come anyway?
Of course you should come! Non-minority candidates are welcome. That is when we put the “Open to All educators” in the title of the job fair.

What do I need to do to prepare myself for the Expo?
Make sure that you have plenty of copies of your resume. Get help if needed to make sure that your resume is as professional as possible. Prepare to be interviewed. Come dressed as you would for any job interview. Remember that you want to give a good impression. Leave the jeans and sneakers at home, but be sure to wear comfortable shoes, since you will be on your feet for most of the day.

How will I know who is hiring in my discipline?
When you resister on the day of the Expo, you will be given a Candidate Handbook. It will list the Anticipated Vacancies by discipline, so that you can look up the area of your certification and find out who is hiring in that discipline. The Anticipated Vacancies for each school will also be listed on a poster prominently displayed behind the recruiters in each booth.

What else is in the Candidate Handbook?
First, there is a page of information that will help you to best utilize your time. There is a listing of Schools by State of all of the schools attending, as well as a list of all of the schools represented by consortia. All of the schools are listed by their booth number and there is a Floor Plan that will help to guide you to the schools that you are interested in seeing. There is a listing of all of the Workshops available to you throughout the day. (There is no extra charge for attending the workshops, which cover a variety of topics from Certification to Resume Writing and Interviewing Skills to Moving up the Ladder to Administration.) The Directory of Schools lists all of the contact people for each school as well as all of the information you need to contact them. The Handbook is a great reference source that can be used after the Expo is over.

What do I do when I find a school that I like?
Find the schools that you are interested in and mark them on the floor plan. Speak with as many recruiters from as many schools as you like. There are no restrictions.

Will there be any schools interviewing candidates that day?
Absolutely! While the method that each school uses to screen the candidates is up to them, there are many administrators who want to do in depth interviews that day. That is why there is a separate Break Out Area. If the school that you are interested in is holding interviews, you may be given a time slip with their table number and the specific time for your interview.

What if I have a few hours until my interviews and there are no other schools that I am interested in seeing?
One of unique features of this Expo is the Workshops, which cover a variety of topics from Certification to Resume Writing and Interviewing Skills to Moving up the Ladder to Administration. Workshop may vary from year to year.

I cannot make it to the job fair until the afternoon – is it still worth my while to come?
Absolutely. There will still be plenty of time to see and be interviewed by many recruiters. There is a constant flow of attendees throughout the day.

Do I have to be willing to relocate in order to find a job?
Of course not! Since there are schools recruiting from all across  the nation, there is a good chance that there will be some near you. However, you might want to think of the fun of relocating to another area. Opportunities abound everywhere – you just have to look for them!

I will graduate in 2010 with my degree in education. Is it worth it for me to attend in 2009 just to see what it is like?
This is one time when you are advised not to attend. Schools cannot hire that far in advance and you would be wasting your time.

I’m not certified. Will any schools hire me?
Most schools do insist on certification. There are a few who will work with you to get your certification. There are also some private and charter schools that do not work under the same restrictions that public schools do.

I am not a teacher, but I work in schools. Do you have any openings for me?
It depends on what type of job you are looking for. There are anticipated vacancies for administrators and support staff (for example School Psychologist or Occupational Therapist). There are no secretarial or maintenance positions.

I live very far away and it will be expensive for me to come to this. Is it still worth it for me?
Absolutely! We have had candidates come from as far away as Brazil. Yes, it will be expensive for air travel and/or hotel, but where else will you have the opportunity to see so many recruiters at the same time? There is reduced rate hotel information available on this website.

Is there any advantage to me arriving at 8:30 AM to register, rather that wait until 10 AM or later to get there?
Yes, and no. Early arrival will gain you first admission and a chance to go over the Candidate Handbook so that you can set up your day. However, later arrival doesn’t take away any of the recruiting experience.

What if I cannot attend? Is there any way I can get information on who is hiring in what disciplines?

Please click here to view a sample of the Handbook This is why we sell the Candidate Handbook! There are many applicants who, for whatever reason, cannot attend. You can order the Handbook in another area of this website. Please note that the Handbooks are not available until after the date of the Expo.
